My Week in Sketches

7:12 AM

You know how some kids are just born to be event planners?...

My roommate and I worked really hard last weekend to get our house cleaned up and ready to finally fully move out. We were like a well-oiled machine.

My dear friends came over to help me move all my biggest, heaviest furniture. I wrote out a to-do list with the things I needed done, plus an "extra credit" section of other things I'd appreciate having them move. Thankfully, my guy friends are overachievers.

I went to a tennis class for the first time in years, and it destroyed me. I was sore for days. It was so fun, though! Once I got past the initial nausea.

"Hush puppies" are a kind of fried cornball, I think, and we had them served to us at a work lunch this week. One coworker in particular had a hard time resisting their deliciousness.

I don't know if anything makes me madder quicker than when the internet stops working for no reason. I go into a bit of a rage, and the router just blinks back at me like an idiot...Seriously, I can't talk about it.

...And sometimes you play leapfrog with your coworkers. You know how it is.

You know how sometimes your sweet landlord insists on giving you a whole ham?...

For the first time in my life, I have a job that gets most major holidays off! It's pretty thrilling.

I finally got internet set up at my new house! I immediately sprawled out on the floor (since I don't have furniture yet) and tried to load a video to check the bandwidth quality. Next thing I knew, I'd watched a whole episode of "Parenthood" on the floor. Internet, I missed you.

I went to my friend's wedding and at one point her dad played some classic camp songs that the majority of us knew, since so many of us at the reception had worked at summer camp together! It was so weird and wonderful.

I joined a small group through my church, and I'm really excited about it!

(The woman hosting it has a pug dog, which is what's in my lap.)

I bonded with my new coworker over the return of a fantastic television series...

...and I played some nerdy board games with friends.
All in all, it was a great week filled with good conversation, camp songs, and, of course, lots of ham.

Man, it's been a busy week for me! I ended one job, started another, and moved to a new city. Needless to say, I haven't had much time for blogging (seriously, I don't even have internet hooked up at my new house yet...) But I've still got some sketch-journal-sketches that I've managed to get onto the interwebs:

My last day at the job I've had for the last seven years - I drew this rather poorly, as if my coworker is serenading me or something...but it's meant to be her announcing that it's my last day to everyone at an all-staff meeting.

I babysat my friends' kiddos and consoled them during the "scary" parts of Despicable Me 2.

Then I started packing up as much as I could into my car. So far I've only moved one (very full) carload into my new place.

I was happy to run into familiar faces at church on Sunday, which felt like a fun foreshadowing of good things to come.

I started my new job on Monday! It was great. Really busy, but I'm excited to be a part of it.

Total bonding with a new coworker...

...Aaaaand what staff meeting would be complete without awkward, clappy sing-a-longs? I'm going to fit in here just fine.
Phew! Big week.
Big month, really. Big year.

My friends and I kicked off the new year by seeing "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" together. I loved it. It was sweet and optimistic and I left the theater dreaming of ways I could make my life better.

Since I would be leaving my job soon, we had to start talking about my replacement...which was just a weird thought after I've occupied this role for seven years.

 My parents helped me househunt...

...And we enjoyed the season premiere of Downton Abbey!

I found a place to live! I got the key and everything. I can hardly wait to start decorating.

I had this sweet conversation with a 4-year-old buddy...I used to live with her and her family, and it was pretty great (but I had to break the news that we're probably not going to be living together again any time soon.)

My coworkers took me out to lunch on my second-to-last day at work and we reminisced about good times we've had together.
Life is busy busy busy right now, but I'm excited about some big changes and new adventures!

My Week in Sketches

Another year of daily sketches is complete!
I like having an illustrated way of looking back at my year.

I went out to lunch with friends on the day after Christmas, at one of our favorite spots in Ventura.

We worked on last-minute baby shower details while another friend from out of town came to visit.

And on Saturday, we threw a baby shower for a dear friend of mine. It was great to see her get loaded up with baby gear, and celebrate her and her future son.

My friend and I spent an evening watching the movie "Jack Reacher" while doing a puzzle (I know, we're so hip!) We enjoyed the movie, despite some of the worst movie dialogue I've ever heard.

My friend and I had a "date night" together, which rarely happens without her husband or kids joining us. We went to dinner and to Target - where, as a mother of three, my friend wanted to savor every moment of kids-free shopping. And I was just happy to hang out with her all night.

On New Year's Eve, a few friends offered to make me an alcoholic drink "that I would like." As a general rule, I hate the taste of alcohol, but I was assured that this drink would taste "just like lemonade"...It did not. It tasted like poison gasoline lemonade. And I rang in the new year with Martenelli's in hand.

Happy new year!
May you have a delightful 2014.
