Tree of Camp Names7:35 AM
Working at summer camp has spawned some of my fondest memories. There's just something about summer camp that has a little bit of magic to it. Several of the friends I've made at camp have become friends in "real life," and it's something I cherish. There's something special about having adventured with these people, and gotten into mischief in our early twenties, and spent every waking minute together for an allotted period of time. One such friend of mine recently "retired" from camp-work, and I drew this as a sort of "retirement" gift. We both worked years ago with younger campers, where all the summer staff go by "camp names." Camp names are a glorious summer camp tradition (in my humble opinion), and it's just fun having a counselor named "Wasabi" or "Buffalo" or "Topaz." MY camp name was (and always will be) Sketch. For obvious reasons.
My camp-retiring buddy worked for ten straight summers, so I wanted to commemorate it for him somehow.
The hollowed-out tree on the rocks has significance to him, and I decided to fill it in with all the camp names of the people he's worked with over the years. It was a long list, and it sort of goes in order chronologically from left to right, 2003 to 2012. That's a LOT of camp (but you can never have too much summer camp!)
Overall it was a very fun project to work on, and I was glad to have an excuse to make it!
